McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Coby Yoshimura's scored twice in the first half to lead the Whitworth Pirates past the Linfield Wildcats by a 2-1 score in Sunday afternoon's Northwest Conference contest.
Molly Webster made eight saves to earn the win for Whitworth (6-2-2, 4-1-1 NWC). Madi Reimer stopped five shots for Linfield (5-3-2, 2-2-2 NWC).
Whitworth dominated the offense in the first half, scoring both of the goals and putting two more shots on target than Linfield. The Bucs and Wildcats nearly drew in shots, with Linfield taking ten to Whitworth's nine, but the Pirates made the goalkeeper work three more times with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Yoshimura took a third of the Bucs' shots on goal and converted both to give the Pirates a 2-0 entering the break. Both of Yoshimura's goals came in the match's first 20 minutes.
The senior's first goal came off an assist from Arielle Van Peursem, which Yoshimura knocked off the goalkeeper and into the goal. The 2nd minute goal was her third of the season, and Van Peursem's assist was her first.
Yoshimura struck again in the 19th minute. Brixiada Mendoza's shot was stopped by Reimer, but Yoshimura was waiting for the rebound and tapped it in to put the Bucs up 2-0. The goal was Yoshimura's second of the season off a rebound from Mendoza.
Linfield got its offense going in the second half. Sami Moellmer knocked in the Wildcats lone goal off a rebound from Sydney Kuehn.
After Mollemer's goal, the Pirate defense buckled down defensively for the final 30 minutes. Center backs Sydney Weiler and Tatem Fredrickson played key roles in the final minutes to hold the lead and Webster made multiple important saves on free kicks.
Up next, the Pirates return home Saturday, Oct. 6 to take on George Fox. The Bucs and Bruins kick off at 12:00 p.m.
