SPOKANE, Wash. – Five Pirates scored on the way to a decisive 5-1 Whitworth victory over the Pacific (Ore.) Boxers.
Whitworth remains in the driver's seat of the Northwest Conference with an 11-4-1 overall record and 10-1-1 conference mark. The Boxers are still searching for their first win at 0-14-2 overall and 0-11-1 in NWC play.
"We've scored five goals two of the last three games. It's a great time of the year to do it," head coach Bryan Olson said.
The Pirates opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal. After a Boxer defender fouled Jennifer Loehner on a run through the penalty area, Kathryn Bischoff made Pacific pay. The 16th minute strike was Bischoff's fourth goal of the season.
The Boxers attempted to even the scoreline before halftime, but shots from Bella Jackson and Kayla Mizo barely escaped the crossbar. Whitworth entered halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
At the break, the Pirates maintained an 8-4 lead in shots and two more of Whitworth's shots were on frame. The Pirates were also called offside four times in the first half.
After halftime, Whitworth maintained its aggressive mentality and poured in four more goals in the final 45 minutes.
Michele Whan kicked off the second half scoring. After getting the ball 30 yards from goal, Whan dribbled to create space and punched a shot into the top left corner of the net. The senior's fourth goal of the season gave Whitworth a 2-0 lead.
Coby Yoshimura continued the attack with her second goal as a Pirate. The junior striker found herself with acres of space after receiving a pass from Nicole Jacobson and Yoshimura took advantage with an 18-yard score.
After ceding the Boxers only goal to Gabby Glasser, Whitworth sent in their fifth goal of the match. Yoshimura earned a penalty kick during a scramble for the ball. Then, Kara Need stepped to the penalty spot and scored her first goal of the season.
"Our whole team came to play today," Olson said. "Nicole and Kara really stepped up and played well.
Up next, the Pirates head to the west side of Washington for a pair of conference-deciding matches with Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran. Whitworth takes on the Loggers Saturday, Oct. 28 and battles the Lutes Sunday, Oct. 29.
