GFU Women Rally for 1-1 Draw with Whitworth
NEWBERG, Ore –Visiting Whitworth had to settle for a 1-1 draw at George Fox when the Bruins scored with 90 seconds left in regulation to force the tie in the Northwest Conference women's soccer finale for both schools on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates finish 7-7-6 overall and 4-6-6 in the NWC. The host Bruins finish the season 3-15-2, 1-13-2.
Whitworth outshot George Fox 12-3 in the first half, forcing Bruin keeper Alyssa Montero to make four saves. But the Pirates could not find the net and the game went to halftime tied 0-0.
The Bucs had a 16-8 edge in shots in the second half, but only two of those Whitworth attempts were on-goal. One of those was true, however. Jackie Day gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute. Day's third goal of the season was set up by Molly Smith.
Whitworth keeper Andrea Stump did all she could to preserve the win. She made two saves just before the tying goal, but could not contain the ball each time. Michelle Young finally put the ball in the net off of the second deflection in the 89th minute. Jenna Prewitt was credited for the assist on Young's third goal of the season.
Both keepers added three saves apiece in the 20 minutes of overtime. Both Stump and Montero had eight total saves in the match.
