SPOKANE, Wash. – Linfield stayed alive in the chase for the Northwest Conference women's soccer championship with a 2-0 win at Whitworth in the regular season finale for both schools on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats (16-2-2 overall, 12-2-2 NWC, 38 points) are one point ahead of Puget Sound (12-2-1, 37 points) in the conference standings. Linfield has to hope for a UPS loss or tie against Pacific (Ore.) in tomorrow's match.
Whitworth finishes its season 10-8-2 overall and 10-4-2 in the NWC, alone in third place.
The Wildcats jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Emma Vukic scored from five yards out after a crossing pass by Emily Fellows. It was the third goal of the year for Vukic.
Stephanie Socotch dribbled around the Whitworth defense for an unassisted goal, her third of the year, in the 31st minute for a 2-0 Linfield lead.
The Wildcats outshot Whitworth 30-10 in the match, including a 14-4 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth keeper Andrea Stump made 12 saves, six in each half, to keep the Pirates within striking distance. Taylor Collins made four saves to post the shutout for Linfield.
