Bokma's Goal Lifts Whitworth to a Win
TACOMA, Wash. – (From PLU Sports Information Office) Hannah Bokma scored on a rebound shot following a save by Pacific Lutheran keeper Marisa Gonzalez, giving visiting Whitworth a 1-0 Northwest Conference women's soccer win over Pacific Lutheran on Sunday afternoon at East Field.
Gonzalez came off her line to stop a shot by Chelsea Schooler, who had gotten in behind the PLU defense, but the ball ricocheted to Bokma, who finished into the open net for her first goal of the season. The goal came at the 76:55 mark.
Following the goal, the Lutes had a couple of looks at goal but both shots ended up wide of the target.
With the victory Whitworth stays tied with Linfield atop the conference standings, both with 7-1-2 records. The Pirates are now 7-5-2 overall this season. Pacific Lutheran, which played some of its best soccer of the season, drops to 2-2-6 in the NWC and 4-2-6 overall.
As indicated by the final score and virtually every statistical category, the two teams played a very even match. The Lutes ended up with 13 shots, five of them on goal, compared to 12 shots, five on goal, for the Pirates. It was only in corner kicks, where PLU had a decided 7-3 advantage, was there a significant difference between the teams.
About 10 minutes prior to scoring the goal, Whitworth had another good chance, only to see Schooler's shot hit off the cross bar.
The Pirates will return home to host Pacific (Ore.) and George Fox next Saturday and Sunday.
