NEWBERG, Ore. – Mackenzie Grow's overtime goal lifted visiting Whitworth to a 1-0 win over George Fox in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates are now all-square at 4-4 overall this season. But much more important, Whitworth is 4-0 in the NWC and atop the NWC standings with 12 points. The Bruins fell to 1-5-2, 0-4.
Whitworth might have put the game away early. The Bucs outshot George Fox 11-3 in the first half and controlled nearly all of the possession. But Bruin keeper Alyssa Montero made five saves in the first period to help keep her team in the game.
Emboldened by getting to halftime in a scoreless draw, George Fox came out with new energy in the second half and outshot Whitworth 9-7. This time it was Pirate keeper Ashley Rothrock who came up with five big saves after halftime to help the Bucs send the match to overtime.
Tiara Pajimola was credited with the assist on Grow's goal, which came from 20 yards and floated over Montero into the top of the net.
The Pirates extended their shutout streak to four in a row. Rothrock finished with six total saves to post her first career shutout.
Whitworth will close its trip to Oregon with a match at Pacific on Sunday at noon.
