SPOKANE, Wash. – Kelly Ferrell converted a penalty kick in the 107th minute to lift 19th-ranked Augustana (Ill.) to a 2-1 win over Whitworth at the Whitworth Soccer Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The win improved the Vikings to 4-0 while the Pirates fell to 0-4 with the hard-luck loss.
The match might not have gone to overtime if not for an own goal that gave Augustana a 1-0 lead in the second half. An unlucky bounce off of a Whitworth defender gave the Vikings the lead in the 73rd minute.
Whitworth found the net in the 85th minute when Tiara Pajimola tallied her second goal of the season to knot the match. She dribbled through the defense and shot the ball just inside the right post.
The Vikings were applying offensive pressure in the middle of the penalty area when the Pirates were whistled for the untimely foul. Ferrell stepped up and calmly drilled the ball into the lower-left corner of the net with just over three minutes to play in the second overtime period.
After struggling to find its shooting touch through the first three matches of the season Whitworth got the offensive chances rolling against Augustana. The Pirates outshot the Vikings 16-12 in the match, however the Vikings had a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth finished with an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Ashley Rothrock made seven saves for the Pirates, while Meredith Chew made six stops for Augustana.
Whitworth will now turn its attention to Northwest Conference play. The Pirates' conference opener is Wednesday afternoon at Whitman.
