THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Three second half goals allowed 16th-ranked California Lutheran to pull away for a 4-1 win over visiting Whitworth in a non-conference women's soccer match on Saturday night.
The Pirates dropped their second straight decision on the season-opening trip to Southern California. The Regals improved to 1-1.
After Taylor Will gave CLU a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, Tiara Pajimola tied the match for Whitworth late in the first half with her first goal of her career.
The Pirates would not find the net again, but the Regals added three more after halftime. Bailey Marquez scored in the 63rd and 71st minutes to give CLU a 3-1 lead. Brittany Eremita scored the final goal in the 85th minute.
The Regals held a 23-8 advantage in total shots, including a 12-2 edge in shots on goal.
Ashley Rothrock started her first match in net for the Pirates and made eight saves.
The Bucs return home to host the Whitworth Soccer Classic next weekend and will take on highly-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday and Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for noon.
