Whitworth Women Shutout by Puget Sound
SPOKANE, Wash. - Defending Northwest Conference champion Puget Sound was more than Whitworth could handle in a 3-0 NWC women's soccer win over the Pirates at the Whitworth Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half it was Kylie Besson of UPS who scored off of a mishandled ball in the eighth minute of play. Later in the half Mikaela Freeman was able to score her third goal in as many games with a well-placed shot in the top right corner of the net; that goal occurred in the 28th minute of play.
Christine Isabella scored her fourth goal of 2011 and the last of the match in the 84th minute.
Mackenzie Grow (Jr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) did her part in an attempt to put Whitworth on the board. Grow recorded four shots throughout the game.
Kara Merfeld made four saves in goal for the Loggers (4-2, 2-1 NWC), while Callie Bergstrom (Sr., GK, Spokane, Wash.) made four stops for the Pirates (1-4-1, 1-2-1). UPS outshot the Pirates 12-7, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Bucs will finish their two-game homestand Sunday at noon versus the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran University.
