OREGON CITY, Ore. – The Whitworth University women's golf team holds fourth place in the team standings after the first round of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic on Saturday at the Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City.
Sophomore Yvonne LaCoursiere and junior Nicole Lomax lead the Pirates in the player standings as both shot matching nine-over-par scores of 81 in the opening round to tie for 13th. Sophomore Chelsea Bayley trails her teammates by a stroke and is tied for 15th after posting an opening round score of 81. Freshmen Michal Schuster (85) and Kiersten Sprick (109) round out Whitworth's five competitors.
The women posted a team score of 329 on the par-72 course and are four strokes behind Willamette heading into the final round of play on Sunday.
George Fox's Sydney Maluenda shot a one-under-par score of 71 to lead the 45 female competitors by two strokes. Whitman's Kelly Sweeney (73), Linfield's Abigail Heringer (74) and Whitman's Katie Zajicke (75) round out the top four players.
Whitman leads the nine-team field, posting a team score of 306 in the opening round. George Fox is four strokes behind Whitman with a score of 310. Willamette (325) and Whitworth (329) sit in third and fourth place, respectively, while Linfield is in fifth with a score of 347. Lewis & Clark shot a 350 for sixth place and Pacific Lutheran is in seventh with a score of 356. Pacific holds the eighth team place with a score of 367 and Puget Sound is in ninth place with a score of 408.
Whitworth will begin the final day of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic tomorrow at Stone Creek Golf Course with a 9:00 a.m. tee time.
