RIDGEFIELD, Wash. – The Whitworth women's golf team finished third at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic at Tri-Mountain Golf Course on Sunday.
The Pirates entered Sunday's round tied for third with Linfield, but lowered their team score by 22 strokes to move them solely into third place. Entering Sunday, George Fox had a 36-stroke lead for first and the Bruins maintained their hold as the ladies went on to finish 52-strokes ahead of second place Whitman.
Senior Emily Guthrie shot 73 in the second round, which tied for the best round of the day, as she moved up to finish second in the player standings. Guthrie (80-72 – 153) finished five strokes behind George Fox's Kelsey Morrison, who took medalist honors after shooting 75-73 – 148.
Freshman Chelsea Bayley shot 91-84 – 175 to tie for 14th place, while freshman Yvonne LaCoursiere shot 95-84 – 179 for 19th place. Junior Ashley Danforth finished tied for 26th after she shot 91-99 -190, and freshman Cindy Tapia finished 30th after shooting 102-94 – 196.
The final women's team scores were: George Fox 314-315 – 629; Whitman 350-331 – 681; Whitworth 357-335 – 692; Willamette 365-339 – 704; Linfield 357-348 – 705; Pacific Lutheran 393-349 – 742; Pacific (Ore.) 401-392 – 793; Puget Sound 440-415 – 855.
The women's team will return to competition in the spring.
