Golf Set To Compete At North Idaho College Invitational

The Whitworth golf teams will compete in the North Idaho College Invitational this weekend at the Avondale Golf Course. The two-day event will feature both the women's and men's teams and will tee-off at 8:30 am on both Sunday and Monday.

The women's team looks to defend its title as North Idaho College Invitational champion after taking first place with a two-day team score of 672 (+96) last year. The men's team looks to improve from last year's fifth place performance. Whitworth had a two-day team score of 624 (+48).

Senior Emily Guthrie finished third and sophomore Nicole Lomax was sixth for the women while juniors Jesse Salzwedel and Stephen Plopper tied for 18th place on the men's side.

After opening the season with an intrasquad meet two weeks ago, the men's team finished second at the Lewiston Triangular last weekend with a team score of 290. Jesse Salzwedel led the Pirates with a score of 68, followed by junior Joey DeGroff who shot a 70. In individual competition, freshmen Tyler McQuilkin and Oliver Rudnicki each shot a 72.

Emily Guthrie was joined by three freshmen to open the season at the Lewiston Triangular two weeks ago. Guthrie shot a 73 to have the best round of the day and the four had a combined team score of 341. Last weekend the team held an intrasquad meet at the Idaho Club golf course.

After the North Idaho Invitational, Whitworth women's team will return home to host the Whitworth Invitational while the men's team will be on the road for the Whitman Invitational. Both tournaments will run from September 30 to October 1.
