ANGOLA, Ind. – Emily Guthrie opened the 2012 NCAA Division III women's golf tournament with a round of 80 (+8) on Tuesday at the Zollner Golf Course.
Guthrie began the round on the back nine and initially struggled to control her nerves. She posted double bogeys on the 10th and 13th holes and finished the back nine with a score of 42.
But Guthrie steadied when she made the turn and posted a 38 on the front nine, including a birdie 4 on the par-5 seventh hole.
Guthrie's first round total of 80 is tied for 33rd place on the individual leaderboard. There are 101 players in the field and she was one of only six individuals selected to compete in the tournament.
Guthrie will tee off the second round on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. (EDT) on the first hole. She is playing with fellow individual competitors Mary Snode of Mt. Union (+7 in the first round) and Flora Weeks of Middlebury (+6).
