CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Whitworth finished 9th in a loaded field at the Augustana Spring Fling women's golf tournament on Thursday and Friday played on the Desert Princess Country Club golf course.
The Pirates totaled 689 to finish 9th in the ten-team field, one spot ahead of Biola. The field included fellow NCAA Div. III teams Whitman (ranked 19th) and Redlands (ranked 25th). St. Edwards, ranked 3rd in NCAA Div. II, won the tournament, which also included three other nationally-ranked Division II teams: #21 Augustana (SD), # 19 Western Washington and #18 Drury.
Emily Guthrie led Whitworth by finishing 12th individually with a score of 81-80 – 161. She was the highest finishing NCAA Division III golfer in the field. Haley Haught of St. Edward's (74-72 – 146) earned medalist honors by edging Augustana's Maggie Leland (73-73 – 146) on the third playoff hole.
The final team scores: St. Edward's 601, Western Washington 632, Drury 638, Augustana 640, Cal State San Marcos 652 and South Dakota State 652, Redlands 671, Whitman 673, Whitworth 689, Biola 734.
Nicole Lomax (87-86 – 173) and Ashley Danforth (91-82 – 173) were in the group tied for 40th place. Elizabeth Martin (88-87 – 175) tied for 45th place. Haley Owens (91-89 – 180) was 48th and Darby Moberg (91-93 – 184) was 51st. Katie O'Neill (92-93 – 185) was 52nd.
There were 58 golfers in the field.
The Pirates return to action on March 31st and April 1st at the NWC Spring Classic, which will be hosted by Whitman at the Wildhorse Resort in Pendleton, Oregon.
