TYLER, Texas – Alex Kochner scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Texas-Tyler Patriots in their 91-63 victory over the Whitworth Pirates.
Another double-double from Madison Moffat wasn't enough for the Pirates (6-5). She scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss. Kochner was one of three Patriots (6-4) who scored in double figures.
Texas-Tyler jumped into a big lead right out of the gate. Brittany Johnson hit two three-pointers on the way to a 14-0 advantage with 4:28 remaining in the first quarter.
Grace Douglas scored the Pirates' first points with 4:08 remaining in the period, knocking down a three of her own and jump-starting the Whitworth offense. The Bucs offense dropped the deficit to 24-14 by the end of the first quarter.
Whitworth looked to have a comeback in the works midway through the second quarter. Down, 14, Camy Aguinaldo and Erika Kuehn led the Pirates back within 7. Aguinaldo hit a deep three off a screen and Kuehn knocked down another to drop the deficit to 8. After a Whitworth free throw and Patriot layup, Aguinaldo used a nifty floater to pull the Bucs within 7.
Unfortunately for Whitworth, the Patriots bounced right back. Kochner and Demi Cumby led Texas-Tyler on a 7-0 run before half, leaving the Bucs back down 14 at the break.
Texas-Tyler continued its strong run in the second half. The Patriots used a 14-2 run coming out of the break to take a 54-29 lead midway through the third quarter. Kochner and Johnson each contributed five of the fourteen points in the run. The Patriots finished the quarter with a 66-36 lead.
Douglas dropped in ten points in an attempt to get the Bucs back into the game, but the Texas-Tyler offense was too much for the Pirates.
The Patriots shot 55% overall and 54% from beyond the arc. They also handily defeated the Bucs on the glass 41-27. Johnson (18 pts) and Cumby (13 pts) joined Kochner in double figures.
Whitworth shot 38% from the floor and 39% from three. Douglas (16 pts) and Moffat were the only Pirates who scored in double figures. Kuehn finished with 9 points, all from beyond the arc.
Up next, the Pirates get two weeks off for the holidays before restarting Northwest Conference play. Whitworth takes on Lewis & Clark on Friday, Jan. 5 in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
