Whitworth Sets Record In Lopsided Win Over Caltech

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whitworth women's basketball team used a 35-0 first half run to defeat Caltech 105-26 at Occidental College on Saturday afternoon and set a school record for the largest margin of victory. In addition to it being the first time since defeating Caltech 101-25 during the 2003-04 season that Whitworth has scored more than 100 points in a contest, it also sets a school record for the most points in a game.

With the win, Whitworth improves to 4-0 on the season and is enjoying its best start since opening the 2006-07 season 5-0. Caltech falls to 0-2 overall.

"After a slow start, we played our game for 35 minutes," said Whitworth head coach Helen Higgs. "Once again our bench jump-started us, picking up the defensive intensity."

After falling behind 5-1 in the early going, the Pirates went on a 7-1 run, capped off by a three- pointer from senior Emily Guthrie to take an 8-6 lead over the Beavers. After staying in a 14-14 tie for a minute and a half of action, the Bucs went on the 35-0 run over the next ten minutes to lead the Beavers 49-14. Whitworth led Caltech 51-20 at halftime.

Whitworth scored the first ten points after the break to add to its lead. The Bucs held Caltech to just six second half points and forced 34 Beaver turnovers that led to 45 points Whitworth. The Pirates scored 52 points in the paint and outrebounded Caltech 57-18. Additionally, Whitworth got 48 points from its bench.

"Our depth definitely wore the Beavers down and enabled us to stretch our lead," Higgs said.

Six Whitworth players scored in double figures, with junior Kendra Lahue's game-high 16 points leading the way. Freshman Faith Emerson scored 13 points, while Jamie Lyons chipped in 12. Senior Lauren Picha had 11 points, while freshman KC McConnell recorded her first career double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game- and career-high 10 rebounds.
