THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Visiting Whitworth build a seven-point halftime lead but California Lutheran rallied for a 67-64 win on the first night of the women's Posada Royale Classic on Saturday.
Jamie Lyons scored 10 of her points in the first half to help the Pirates (1-4) take a 37-30 lead into the locker rooms. Jenna Cacchillo scored back to back baskets to give Whitworth its largest lead of the game at 22-11 midway through the first period.
Kayla Johnson's basket just over two minutes into the second half gave Whitworth its last double-digit lead at 42-32. At that point the Regals went on a 10-0 run to tie the game with 12:36 to go. Emily Guthrie drained a three-pointer for a 47-44 Pirate advantage before CLU scored seven straight points to take a lead it would never relinquish.
After the Regals opened a 65-58 lead with 1:20 to play, the Pirates got within 65-62 on back to back buckets by by Lyons with 50 seconds to play. Lyons had a chance to tie the game just before the buzzer, but her three-pointer was just off the mark.
Lyons made 7-14 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. Guthrie finished with 15 points, while Lauren Picha added 11 points. Johnson led the Pirates with nine rebounds.
Chelsey Hastigan led CLU with a game-high 20 points.
Notes: Lyons' total was a career-high, topping the 15 points she scored in win over Whitman last January. George Fox defeated Chapman 74-57 in the first game on Saturday at CLU.
