Pirate Trio Earn Academic All-District Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. – Three Whitworth University track and field All-Americans have added academic recognition to their 2018 list of honors.

Kayla Leland, Marissa Mount and Andrew Bloom are all members of the 2018 Google Cloud Division III Academic All-District 8 Track & Field/Cross Country teams.

Leland and Mount both made it on the 11-member women's team.

Leland was an All-American in three sports in 2017-18, beginning with a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.  She finished fifth in the 5,000 meters at the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.  Leland closed out her season with a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  In between Leland was the 2018 Northwest Conference women's track Athlete of the Year after she won the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters in less than 24 hours.  Leland is a health science and Spanish double major who carried a 3.94 GPA into the spring semester.  She will attend graduate school at Washington State University this fall.

Mount had a perfect 4.00 GPA heading into the spring semester as an accounting and finance double major.  She was an All-Region and second team All-Northwest Conference honoree in cross country while helping Whitworth win a third straight NWC title and national championship berth.  She went on to claim the NWC title in the 3,000 steeplechase and finish fourth in that event at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  Only Leland's time in that event is faster in Whitworth and Northwest Conference history.

Bloom was one of two Northwest Conference student-athletes selected to the 10-member men's academic All-District squad.  He is now a three-time All-American in the javelin throw after finishing third in that event last week at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  The 2016 NCAA Division III champion and 2017 Northwest Conference champion graduated in May of 2017 with a 3.82 GPA.  He is enrolled in Whitworth's M.Ed. program in Administrative Leadership.

All three are now eligible for selection to the 2018 Google Cloud Division III Academic All-America teams.
