Week of Jan. 4 - Jan. 10
SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth swimmers Megan Thompson and Wes Walton have each been named a Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week following strong performances against Seattle U last weekend at the Whitworth Aquatic Center.
Thompson (Sophomore / Austin, Texas / Saint Andrews Episcopal) was named the NWC Women's Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week after scoring the most individual points of any Whitworth woman against NCAA D-I Seattle U.
Her time in winning the 1,000 freestyle (11:04.99) was the second-fastest in the NWC this season. She also earned second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:59.86) and 500 freestyle (522.56), and was on the second-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:48.90).
Walton (Senior / Heyburn, Idaho / Minico) had a great weekend during the Pirates' two dual meets against Seattle U to be named the NWC Men's Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time during the season. Five of the six times he was involved in are the best times so far this season in the NWC.
His individual marks in the 100 backstroke (51.95) and 200 backstroke (1:53.82), both of which were second-place finishes, and in the first-place 200 individual medley (1:55.94) are the best in the league this year. He was on winning relays that posted NWC-best times this season (1:34.62 in the 200 medley, 3:11.14 in the 400 freestyle), and both times are ranked in the top 50 nationally. He also posted a split of 47.62 leading off the 400 free relay on Friday.
