Swimming Returns to Competition at Seattle U

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth swimming teams return to competition on Saturday with a dual meet at NCAA Division I Seattle University.

The Pirates are coming off of a successful three weeks of training following the Christmas break.  The team returned to campus on December 27th and went to work, putting in between 12,000 and 18,000 yards of work each day over the next ten days.

Once classes resumed for Jan Term on Monday, the team returned to a normal practice schedule.

"Our winter training camp showed us that as a team we are fit and ready to swim fast at the end of the year," said head coach Steve Schadt.

Saturday's meet will begin at 1:00 pm at Seattle University.  The Pirates and Redhawks have competed against each other since the days when SU was Division III and a member of the Northwest Conference in the 1990's.  Since that time the athletics department at Seattle has moved to Division II and now to Division I as a member of the Western Athletics Conference.

The Redhawks are one of two non-conference opponents the Pirates will face in a dual meet this season.  The other will come on January 25th when Whitworth hosts the College of Idaho.

"Against Seattle University we face a quality team that will very much be like the type of opponents that we will find at the NCAA Division III Championships," Schadt said. "This meet will help prepare us for our conference championship meet and the post season."
