FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Whitworth University men had four individual swims in the evening finals during the second day of competition at the Husky Invitational on Saturday night.
Aaron Vaccaro led the way by reaching the evening in two different events – the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. Vaccaro made the "C" final in the 100 fly and finished 24th with a time of 51.34. He had posted a 50.88 in the morning prelims. He then took 29th in the "D" final of the 100 back with a time of 53.23.
Wes Tatum also swam tonight in the "D" final of the 100 fly and went 51.28 to finish in 26th place.
Aaron Sumnicht was the fourth Pirate individual swim on Saturday night. He finished 29th in the "D" final of the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:16.69.
Mitchell Back was Whitworth's top finisher in the morning preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.56. Lucas Lin went 1:00.65 to take 45th in the prelims of the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Pirate men finished well in both relay races on Saturday. Vaccaro, Kyle Wicks, Tatum and Callum MacKintosh took 10th place in the 200-yard medley relay with a season-best time of 1:35.65. At the end of the night it was Beck, Luke Welle, Matthew Brody and Nathan Ranno placing 11th in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a season-best mark of 7:02.85.
The Whitworth women's 800 relay of Nicole Lecoq, Kate Duvall, Alisa Stang and Kori Carpenter took 19th place with a time of 7:51.60. Lecoq, Melissa Barringer, Samantha Smith and Stang were 25th in the 200 medley with a time of 1:50.87.
Duvall just missed reaching the evening heats in the 100 back after finishing 36th in the prelims of the 100 back in a season-best 59.58.
Smith was the top Pirate finisher in both the 100 fly (51st in 58.81) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.15). Lecoq was 64th in the 200 freestyle (1:57.27) while Abby Pavelko was 81st in the 400 I.M. (4:47.38).
The meet concludes on Sunday with prelims at 9:00 am and finals starting at 5:00 pm.
