WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Samantha Smith led the Whitworth women to a first place finish at the Northwest Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Whitman College.  But the Pirate men finished second to the host Missionaries.

Smith finished first in all three of her individual events and was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay for the Whitworth women.    She won the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.89), the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.07) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.93).  She was joined on the medley relay by Nicole Lecoq, Melissa Barringer and Alisa Stang and that group posted a winning time of 1:52.44.

Stang and Lecoq also swam on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay at the end of the meet, along with Kate Duvall and Kori Carpenter, winning in 8:06.06.

The Whitworth women won seven of the 14 events.  The final women's team score was Whitworth 189, Whitman 158, Pacific (Ore.) 140, College of Idaho 81.

The men's meet came down to a battle between Whitman victories and Whitworth depth.  The Pirates only won two events, to 12 for the Missionaries.  But Whitworth kept the meet close before losing.  The final men's team score was: Whitman 210, Whitworth 182, Pacific (Ore.) 113, College of Idaho 56.

The Pirate 200 medley relay team of Jason Lemley, Kyle Wicks, Aaron Vaccaro and Callum MacKintosh won with a time of 1:37.97.

Vaccaro was Whitworth's only individual event winner, claiming the 100-yard backstroke in 53.83.

Whitworth will return to action at the Husky Invitational in Federal Way, Washington (Nov. 30 – Dec. 2).
