SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men won all 11 events while the Pirate women claimed 10 of the 11 races in a dual meet sweep of visiting Linfield on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Aquatic Center.
The final men's score was 172-32 in favor of Whitworth, while the women's final was 152-53 in favor of the Pirates.
Nine different Whitworth men won the nine individual events on Saturday and the Pirates finished 1-2-3 in seven of those races. Wes Tatum led a 1-2-3 Whitworth finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.96. Three Pirate freshmen went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard breaststroke, led by Kyle Wicks with a time of 2:17.25. Mitchell Beck posted a strong winning time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.73).
Whitworth won both men's relays, claiming the 400-yard medley relay in 3:38.80 and the 400-yard free relay in 3:18.32.
Lee Rivers had Linfield's best finish – third place in the men's 200-yard individual medley (2:04.91).
Three Whitworth women won two events each against the Wildcats. Bridget Louis won both the 1000-yard freestyle (11:03.44) and the 500 freestyle (5:21.93). Samantha Smith had an impressive double in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.46) and the 200 butterfly (2:17.16), separated by only about 20 minutes of rest. Alisa Stang sprinted to a win in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.71) and the 100 freestyle (54.52).
Kelsey Kimura had Linfield's only individual win of the day in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.54.
The Pirate women also won both relays, claiming the 400 medley in 4:09.69 and the 400 freestyle in 3:45.98.
The Pirate teams will be on the road at Pacific and Lewis & Clark next weekend.
