SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth swimming teams opened the 2012-13 dual meet season with a pair of dominating victories over visiting Willamette on Friday night at the Whitworth Aquatic Center.
The Pirate women and men each swept to wins in all 11 events during the dual with the Bearcats.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the Whitworth women's victory was the team depth displayed by the Pirates. Eight different swimmers won the nine individual events for the Whitworth women. The only Pirate with two individual victories was Samantha Smith, who won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.14 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.60.
Duvall went on the win the 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.79, while Stang sprinted to 24.56 to win the 50-yard freestyle.
The first-year swimmers won events for the Pirate women. Kori Carpenter won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.69, Bridget Louis won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:47.92 and Hannah Norris won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.75.
Aaron Vaccaro and Mitchell Beck were double-event winners for the Whitworth men. Vaccaro won the 50 free in 22.18 and the 100 butterfly in 52.31. Beck won both the 200 freestyle (1:47.56) and the 100 freestyle (49.60).
Freshman Kyle Wicks had a big night as well. He won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.94) in his only individual event. But he was also part of both winning relays. The Pirate 200 medley relay won in 1:37.95, while the 200 freestyle relay won in 1:31.28.
Alex Guffey had the best finish for Willamette's men or women on Friday night. He took second place in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.16.
Whitworth will host Linfield College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
