Pirate Swimmers Sprint Past Linfield
McMINVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth University men won all 11 events for the second day in a row and the Pirate women won nine of the 11 events in a Northwest Conference dual meet sweep at Linfield College on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirate depth was again evident as seven different men won the nine individual events in Whitworth's 152-52 victory in the men's dual. Wesley Walton and Rory Buck were the two Bucs to win two events each. Walton won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.38) and the 100-yard backstroke (54.99). Buck raced to a 47.61 to win the 100-yard freestyle and also won the 100-yard breaststroke (55.98).
Andrew Sumnicht posted a 4:19.21 to win the 400-yard individual medley, while Aaron Vaccaro sprinted to a 52.87 in the 100-yard butterfly.
Whitworth's men swept the relays, claiming the 200-yard medley in 1:38.67 and the 200-yard free relay in 1:29.68.
The Pirate women won the dual meet 142-61 while also winning both relays. Whitworth won the 200 medley in 1:52.36 and the 200 free in 1:42.16.
Abby Pavelko, who won two events on Friday night, earned a victory in the 400 I.M. in 4:43.21, leading a 1-2-3 Pirate sweep. Kate Duvall took the 200 freestyle (2:03.82) and Jennifer Benson won the 100 back (1:02.27).
Michael Coiner, who was injured for much of the fall portion of the season, won the 500-yard free in 5:34.26. Alisa Stang sprinted to a win in the 50-yard free (25.80).
Whitworth will host its first meet of 2012 next Friday when the Pirates take on University of Puget Sound.
