Pirate Swimmers Finish 9th at Husky Invite

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Whitworth moved up to ninth place in the final standings at the 2011 Husky Invitational on Sunday at the King County Aquatic Center.

Kate Duvall had the highest individual finish for the Pirates on Sunday when she took seventh place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.00.

Abby Pavelko took 16th place in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:00.36.

The Pirate women finished in 11th place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.61.

The Whitworth men's 400 free relay of Austin Vierra, Nathan Ranno, Matthew Brody and Aaron Vaccaro took 7th place with a time of 3:13.36.

Vierra tied for the best individual finish for the men when he took ninth in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:34.07. Luke Welle was 16th (16:56.90) and Oliver Durand was 18th (17:02.24).

Wes Walton finished ninth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.38. He also took 11th in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.19.

Durand also scored twice on Sunday, finishing 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.12).

The Pirates scored 566 points to finish in ninth place without 2011 NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year Rory Buck, who did not compete this weekend. Fellow NWC-member Puget Sound finished 11th (474), Whitman took 18th (178), Pacific Lutheran finished 29th (74) and Lewis & Clark was 45th (1).

British Columbia won with 2,546.5 points, while Grand Canyon was second (2,521.5).
