The Whitworth University softball team opens Northwest Conference action at Willamette University this weekend.
The Pirates and the Bearcats will play a pair of doubleheaders that begin at 12:00 p.m. on both Saturday, February 22nd and Sunday, February 23rd.

Last Time Out: Whitworth opened the 2014 campaign with 10 games in California. The Pirates split the opening double header before going on to win the next six games. Whitworth dropped the final two games against Cal Lutheran to end the trip with a 7-3 record.
The Pirates: Two Pirates have combined for five Whitworth home runs this season. Senior Julia Johnson, who recorded six homers last season, has three already this season. Junior Peyton McMahon has two home runs this season, including a grand slam against La Verne, and she leads the team with 12 RBI. Junior Taylor Gilbert has a .647 batting average for the Pirates, with 11 hits in 17 at-bats.
Freshman Shannon Wessel leads the team in stolen bases; she has been successful in six of her seven attempts.
In the circle, Taylor Gilbert has 12 strikeouts for the Pirates with a 2.38 ERA. Freshman Madi Perez (3-1) has 20 strikeouts and a 5.50 ERA for Whitworth.
The Bearcats: Willamette is 1-1 this season after dropping the season opener to Concordia (Ore.) and defeating Northwest Christian.
Four Bearcats have a .500 batting average or higher after the opening two games. Erin Norris leads Willamette with a .600 batting average and five runs batted in this season. Norris also has the lone home run of the season for the Bearcats.
In the circle, Jade Smith has a 4.50 ERA with three strikeouts in four innings pitched. She recorded Willamette's win over Northwest Christian.
