Softball Splits With Augsburg in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Caylan Haehl went 3-3 at the plate and Tayor Gilbert tossed a five-inning two-hitter to lead Whitworth to a 9-0 win in the nightcap of a split in Thursday's softball doubleheader with Augsburg at the Tucson Invitational.  The Auggies won the opener 5-3.

Whitworth is 11-15 while Augsburg is 5-11. The Pirates will conclude their trip to Arizona with games against Carleton (Minn.) and Carthage (Wis.) on Friday.

Game 1 – Augsburg 5, Whitworth 3
Auggie pitcher Kylee Persing threw a complete-game victory and went 3-3 at the plate to lead her team to a win over the Pirates.

Persing had an RBI single in the Auggies' three-run first inning.  Her RBI triple in the fifth drove in the winning run and she scored the insurance run when Kelsey Rorabeck followed with a double.

The Pirates scored single runs in each of the first three innings.  Heather Hesselgesser went 2-3 at the plate and singled home runs in both the first and third innings.  Sami Parr had a sacrifice fly in the second.

Riley Fritz took over in the circle for Whitworth in the bottom of the first inning and gave up two runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings with five strikeouts and no walks.  She dropped to 6-10 this season.

Persing (2-2) allowed two earned runs on nine hits.

Game 2 – Whitworth 9, Augsburg 0 (5 innings)
Gilbert improved her pitching record to 5-1 with her five-inning two hitter.  She struck out two batters and walked only one.  Gilbert also drove in a pair of runs to support her own cause.

Haehl went 3-3 with a double and drove in three runs.  She doubled and scored in the Pirates' two-run second inning and added a two-run single during the Bucs' four-run rally in the third.  She added her final RBI in the fourth with her third hit of the game.

Jamie Brunner went 2-4 and scored three times.
