PASCO, Wash. – Defending national champion Linfield outscored Whitworth 23-3 in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Columbia Basin College.
The top-ranked Wildcats hit four home runs and Ashley Garcia had six RBIs to improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the NWC. The Pirates fell to 2-6, 0-2. Whitworth and Linfield hope to complete the series with a second doubleheader on Monday beginning at 11:00 am.
Game 1 – Linfield 13, Whitworth 2 (6 innings)
Garcia homered and drove in three runs to lead the Wildcats, who broke away with six runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Garcia's home run came leading off the second inning. She also had a two run single in the sixth. Staci Doucette hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Jordan Mixsell hit a two-run shot in the sixth.
Jessica Ross hit a two-run homer for the Pirates in the bottom of the fifth.
Lauren Harvey threw all six innings for the Wildcats, giving up only three hits and striking out six.
Riley Fritz tossed four innings for the Pirates and fell to 1-4.
Game 2 – Linfield 10, Whitworth 1 (5 innings)
Linfield broke open the game early, scoring nine runs in the first two innings.
Garcia had a two-run double and Haylie Watson doubled in another run in the Wildcats' five-run first inning. Garcia added an RBI single in the second and Katy Brosig finished off the four-run second with her own RBI single.
Doucette hit her second home run of the day, a solo shot, in the top of the third.
Sasha Clow singled in the first and drove in the Pirates' only run with a ground out in the bottom of the third.
Karina Paavola tossed the first four innings to pick up the win for Linfield.
Megan Fisher (0-2) was the starter for the Bucs, but she only lasted a third of an inning.
