CLACKAMAS, Ore. – After suffering a no-hit loss in Sunday's first game to Concordia, Whitworth led defending NAIA champion Oregon Tech late before falling 7-3 at the Northwest Cup softball tournament at Hood River Park.
The Pirates finish the three-day tournament with a record of 2-4. Whitworth is scheduled to open its Northwest Conference schedule next weekend by hosting defending NCAA Division III champion Linfield at Marks Field.
Game 1 – Concordia 8, Whitworth 0 (5 inn.)
The Cavaliers (4-7) scored all eight runs in the third inning and Ashley Suter struck out 11 Pirates while throwing a no-hitter.
Laura Luther led off the eight-run third for Concordia with a home run, then added a two-run double later in the inning. Kyndell Andrews also had a pair of hits and two RBIs in the inning for the Cavs.
Megan Fisher (0-1) threw all four innings for Whitworth, allowing six earned runs on 14 hits.
Game 2 – Oregon Tech 7, Whitworth 3
The Pirates led the defending national champion Owls 3-1 into the fifth inning before OIT (8-2) rallied for five runs.
Kayde Schaefer hit a solo homer and Jess Plummer drilled a three-run shot in the five-run fifth for OIT.
Fritz (1-3) pitched most of the game for the Pirates, giving up six runs on eight hits. Taylor Gilbert threw .2 of an inning during the OIT rally. Melissa Logan was the winner in relief for the Owls after she pitched 4.0 innings and gave up no runs on only two hits.
Ashlyn Mundo had three hits for Whitworth, while Clow and Johnson each had two hits.
