15th-ranked Whitman Sweeps Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – Fifteenth-ranked Whitman rolled to a 9-0 win at Whitworth in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Thursday night at the Scotford Tennis Center.

The Missionaries improved to 11-6 overall and 8-0 in the NWC while the Pirates dropped to 5-12, 4-6.

Whitman took all three doubles contests, but those three points did not come easily.  Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham pushed the Missionary pair of San Sadeghi and Matt Tesmond before falling 9-8 with the tiebreaker going to 11-9 at #1 doubles.

Earlier Andy Riggs and Steven Roston defeated John Talbot and Troy Patterson 8-2 at #2 doubles.  Noah Lee and Colton Malesovas beat Matt Goebel and Drew Adams 8-4 at #3.

Whitman clinched the team victory with wins in the top three singles matches.  Sadeghi swept Chris Engelmann 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles for a 4-0 team score.  Then Riggs defeated Brigham 6-4, 6-2 at #2 singles for the clinching fifth point.

Williams pushed Malesovas 6-4, 6-4 at the top of the ladder in the closest singles contest of the match.

The bottom three singles contests were also straight-set wins for Whitman.  Alex Noyes edged Dustin McConnell 6-2, 7-5 at #6 in the closest of the three.

Roston beat Talbot 6-0, 6-2 at #4 and Lee defeated Blake Miller 6-1, 6-0 at #5.

Whitworth will close the regular season with matches at Pacific Lutheran (Friday) and Puget Sound (Saturday) next weekend.
