Willamette Rallies to Beat Pirate Netters

SALEM, Ore. – Willamette took five out of the six singles matches to rally past visiting Whitworth in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Friday afternoon.

The teams are now tied in the NWC men's tennis standings and the Bearcats get an edge in the battle for a spot in the NWC tournament.  The Pirates are now 4-9 overall and 4-4 in the NWC while Willamette is 4-6, 4-4.

Whitworth nearly led 3-0 after doubles.  Chris Englemann and Micah Spaun gave the Bucs an 8-6 win at #2 doubles, while Matt Goebel and Troy Patterson also earned an 8-6 win at #3 doubles.

Willamette's Joshua Wong and Sam Wexman salvaged a doubles point for the Bearcats when they pulled out a 9-8 (7-4) win over Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham.

It was Brigham that earned Whitworth's only singles victory, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Wexman at #2 singles.

Two other singles matches went three sets.  Willamette's Will Cooper edged Engelmann 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 at #3 singles and Blake Brash got by Goebel 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at #6 singles.

Whitworth will continue its trip to Oregon with a match at Pacific on Saturday.
