SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth swept all six singles matches on the way to an 8-1 win over visiting Linfield in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Friday night at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 4-7 overall, 4-2 in the NWC while the Wildcats dropped to 0-7, 0-7.
Whitworth took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. John Talbot and Troy Patterson rolled to an 8-2 win over Linfield's Tim Hawkins and Ben Brewer at #3 doubles. The Pirate pair of Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham then followed with an 8-4 win over Micah Roos and Joel Trousdale 8-4 at #1 doubles.
The first three singles matches all went Whitworth's way, clinching the team victory for the Pirates. Brigham ran away with a 6-1 , 6-1 win over Roos at #2 singles. Engelmann beat Trousdale 6-0, 7-5 at #3. Williams outlasted Lyson 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at #1 singles in the only contest that went three sets.
The bottom of the ladder gave the Pirates a sweep of the singles matches. Talbot had little trouble during a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alex Mangan at #5 singles. The other two matches were much closer. Miller edged Hawkins 7-5, 7-5 at #4, while Matt Goebel nipped Kleinman 6-4, 7-5 at #6.
Whitworth will take on Pacific Lutheran on Saturday morning at 10:30 am.
