NEWBERG, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth took two of the three doubles matches but dropped five of the six singles contests in a 6-3 Northwest Conference men's tennis loss at George Fox on Saturday afternoon.
The match had to be moved to the Tualatin Hills Tennis Club during the doubles matches because of rain.
The Pirates (1-5, 1-1 NWC) went ahead 2-1 after the doubles matches. Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham won the #1 match 8-3 over Shawn Aldrich and Chris Lilley. Matt Goebel and John Talbot won 8-3 at #3 for the Bucs. GFU got its lone doubles point when Peter Brown and Justin McCain topped Chris Engelmann and Blake Miller 8-3.
Whitworth could not sustain the same momentum into the singles matches. Brigham was the only Pirate winner, beating Aldrich 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 at #2.
McClain edged Williams in three close sets at #1 singles. The final was 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6). Lilley beat Engelmann 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 at #3 singles. All the rest of the Bruins' wins in singles came in straight sets.
Whitworth returns home to host Pacific (Ore.) next Saturday.
