PORTLAND, Ore. – Matt Goebel's dramatic three-set win lifted visiting Whitworth to a 5-4 victory over Lewis & Clark in the Northwest Conference men's tennis opener for both school's on Friday night at the LC Tennis Dome.
The Pirates improved to 1-4 overall while the Pioneers dropped to 0-2.
Whitworth took two of three doubles matches. Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham ran to an 8-3 win over Kevin Ross and Daniel Hahm at #1 doubles. Goebel and John Talbot defeated Cole Pfeiffer and Ryotaro Tokura 8-5 at #3 doubles. Chris Engelman and Blake Miller fell 9-7 in a hard-fought match at #2 doubles.
Whitworth got a quick singles point from Brigham, who defeated Carter Taylor-Gee 6-0, 6-2 at #2, but L&C answered back with a point at #1 where Ross swept Williams 6-2, 6-1.
Talbot beat Pfeiffer 6-3, 6-3 at #5 singles, but the Pioneers tied the match 4-4 with close victories at #3 and #4 singles.
Geobel won the opening set 6-2 before Tokura took the second set 6-4. Goebel used a big serve in the final set to close out the match and the team victory 6-4.
Whitworth will look for a second win this season on Saturday at George Fox.
