SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth completed a season sweep of Lewis & Clark with a 7-2 win over the visiting Pioneers on Friday evening at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 11-7 overall and 8-3 in the Northwest Conference while L&C dropped to 3-10, 2-9.
The match was not a runaway early as the Pirates only took two of three doubles matches and had to go overtime to win one of those doubles contests. Daniel Redfern and Micah Spaun outlasted Quinn Roth-Carter and Oliver Groot 9-7 at #1 doubles. The Bucs got their first point when Matt Goebel and John Talbot topped Scott Monismith and Christian Stanbrook 8-3 at #3. The Pioneers picked up a point when Cole Pfeifer and Carter Gee-Taylor edged Stefan Dernbach and Ben Hamming 8-5.
With the clear weather the teams were able to play all six singles matches simultaneously, using both the indoor and outdoor Cutter Courts.
L&C's only point came when Groot beat Redfern 6-3, 6-3 at #1 singles in a matchup of two players with the best #1 singles records in the NWC.
Whitworth swept the rest of singles matches to pull away. Spaun beat Gee-Taylor 6-1, 6-2 at #2 singles, while Dustin McConnell defeated Roth-Carter 6-1, 6-2 at #3.
Hamming held off Monismith 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 at #4 in the only singles contest that went more than three sets.
Chris Englemann topped Pfeifer 6-1, 6-4 at #5 and Goebel rolled past Lucas Fodor 6-2, 6-0 at #6 singles.
Whitworth will close out the regular season by hosting George Fox on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
