SALEM, Ore. – Whitworth strengthened its hold on a place in the 2012 Northwest Conference men's tennis tournament with a 6-3 win at Willamette on Friday evening at the WU Tennis Courts.
The Pirates improved to 9-6 overall and 6-3 in the NWC, increasing its lead for fourth place over Pacific Lutheran (4-5 NWC). The top four teams advance to the NWC tournament at the end of the season.
The Bearcats fell to 3-11, 3-7.
Whitworth took two of the three doubles matches. Cameron Williams and Dustin McConnell earned an easy 8-1 win over Garrett Vincent and Will Cooper at #2 doubles. Ben Hamming and Stefan Dernbach followed with an 8-3 win over Cameron Thompson and Andrew Laufer at #3 doubles. Willamette's Joshua Wong and Cody Ferguson slipped past Daniel Redfern and Micah Spaun 8-5 at #1 doubles.
Willamette won two of the top three singles matches to tie the contest 3-3. Redfern outlasted Wong 3-6, 7-5 (retired) at #1 singles. But Ferguson edged Williams 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at #2 and Vincent defeated Dustin McConnell 6-2, 6-1 at #3.
Whitworth wrapped up the team victory by taking all of the bottom three singles matches. Hamming came from behind to defeat Will Cooper 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at #4, while John Talbot rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Will Agnew-Svoboda at #5. Chris Englemann had little trouble with Jack Schreiber 6-1, 6-1 at #6.
Whitworth will play at Linfield on Saturday.
