SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth will take a three-match winning streak into its spring break trip to Florida after the Pirates defeated visiting Linfield 8-1 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Saturday evening at the Scotford Tennis Center.
Whitworth improved to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the NWC, while the Wildcats fell to 2-7, 2-6.
The Pirates swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead over Linfield. Stefan Dernbach and Micah Spaun made quick work of Micah Roos and Ian Rapport at #2 doubles. John Talbot and Matt Gobel followed with an 8-3 win over Ben Brewer and Luke Kleinman at #3 doubles. The closest doubles match came at #1 where Daniel Redfern and Cameron Williams edged Cody Levien and Zach Lyons 8-6.
Whitworth clinched the team victory by sweeping the top three singles matches. Redfern cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lyons at #1 singles, while Williams topped Levien 6-1, 6-3 at #2. Spaun beat Kleinman 6-4, 6-2 at #3.
With the team win settled, the final three singles matches took to the courts. Dernbach blanked Rapport 6-0, 6-0 at #5 singles, while Ben Hamming held off Brewer 7-5, 6-0 at #6 singles.
The Wildcats picked up their only point when Roos edged Talbot 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Whitworth heads to Orlando, Florida on Monday for spring break. The Pirates will take on NCAA Division III Birmingham Southern (March 20), NCAA Div. II Augustana, SD (March 21) and NCAA Div. III Oneonta State, NY (March 23). The Bucs will also play an exhibition match at NAIA Webber International (March 23).
