
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's tennis team opened its Northwest Conference schedule with a 9-0 win over visiting Puget Sound on Friday night at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates (2-2 overall, 1-0 NWC) did not give up a set against the Loggers (0-3, 0-2).
Daniel Redfern and Cameron Williams teamed up to defeat Michael Cutter and Ben Miller 8-3 at #1 doubles. Redfern went on to sweep Cutter 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles, while Williams beat Miller 6-0, 6-2 at #2 singles.
Micah Spaun and Stefan Dernbach ran away for an 8-1 win at #2 doubles over John Stevens and George Murphy. Spaun beat Murphy 6-1, 6-2 at #3 singles, while Dernbach topped Stevens 6-0, 6-1 at #5 singles.
John Talbot and Matt Gobel defeated Abe Noyes and Jake Peterson 8-4 at #3 doubles. Talbot topped Noyes 6-0, 6-1 at #4 singles.
Chris Engleman beat Michael Tieu 6-0, 6-1 at #6 singles.
Whitworth will take on Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, while Puget Sound travels to play nationally-ranked Whitman.
