SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's tennis team opened the 2012 season with a 9-0 loss to NCAA Division I Eastern Washington on Sunday night at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The visiting Eagles swept the doubles matches and then won all six singles contests.
Daniel Redfern and Cameron Williams battled well at #1 doubles before falling 8-4 to James Russell and Chris Eriksson. Similarly Ben Hamming and Micah Spaun lost 8-4 to Chad Henninger and Julian Sanchez at #2 doubles.
Williams was the only Pirate to take his opponent past the second set. He battled Navarro before falling 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) at #2 singles.
Redfern played a close second set in a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Russell at #1 singles. John Talbot took Ben Anderson to a 6-4 score in the first set before losing 6-4, 6-2 at #6 singles.
Next Saturday Whitworth will travel to Lewiston, Idaho to take on both Lewis-Clark State and College of Idaho in a pair of non-conference matches.
