SPOKANE, Wash – The Whitworth Pirates controlled all 90 minutes of the match with the Pacific (Ore.) Boxers and come away with a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon.

The Whitworth's (5-10-3, 4-6-2 NWC) lone goal came from Jose Bautista, who scored his first goal as a Pirate in the win. The Boxers fell to 2-10-4 overall and 1-8-3 in Northwest Conference play.

"Obviously, it's nice to get the win, and I'm proud of the way our guys were able to imprint themselves on the game," Whitworth head coach Morgan Cathey said.

Whitworth controlled possession for almost the entire match but couldn't break through until the second half. The Bucs took 14 shots in the first 45 minutes, but Brock Jones held strong with 5 saves to keep the match scoreless entering the break.

Bautista broke through in the 67th minute. Zanskar Blair made a run up the right side of the field, but Brock Jones saved his shot. The rebound bounced right to Bautista, who took one dribble and sent a rocket into the back of the net.

"We've been feeling for Jose because he had not gotten on the scoresheet yet and he's earned it," Cathey said. "I'm really happy for him, because he wants to contribute and today he got to score the goal that decided the match."

The goal was more than enough for the Pirates, who only allowed Pacific to take two shots on target and six total during the match. Jesus Nunez needed just two saves to come away with the shutout.

Whitworth's control of the match showed in the statistics. The Pirates finished the match with large leads in shots (28-6), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (8-2).

The Pirates will look to turn Saturday's victory into a strong run of play when they take on George Fox on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Whitworth will celebrate its seven seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
