Seniors Secure Overtime Win for Pirates

NEWBERG, Ore. – Last-second goals from a pair of seniors gave the Whitworth Pirates a 2-1 overtime victory over the George Fox Bruins.

Whitworth jumps to 9-7-1 overall and 7-4-1 in Northwest Conference play, while the Bruins fall to 4-13-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the NWC.

The match started ominously for George Fox, who went a man down in the 4th minute when referees sent off Daniel Alonzo. They would play the majority of the match with ten men.

The Bruins nearly paid for Alonzo's miscue right away. Soon after the red card, George Fox was called for a hand ball in the penalty box. Sure-footed forward Jonah Snyder stepped to the spot, but missed his first penalty kick of the season to leave the match square at 0-0.

Instead of Snyder, the Bruins opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Sean Owens took in a cross from Trever Martin and beat goalkeeper Tony Watters to give George Fox a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins held the 1-0 advantage for the majority of the match despite a furious attacking effort from Whitworth.

Over the match's first 90 minutes, the Pirates peppered Bruin goalkeeper Andrew Phillis with shot after shot, but Phillis held strong for the majority of the match to nearly secure a shutout. Whitworth took 35 shots before overtime, and Phillis saved 10 of the Pirates' 11 shots on goal.

Fortunately for Whitworth, Snyder knocked in the 11th shot on goal in the 89th minute. The senior stepped to the penalty spot and redeemed himself by scoring the Pirates' equalizer.

Snyder's goal sent the Pirates to overtime, where Tyler Pangia stepped up to win the match. The senior captain booted home the match-winner on a corner kick rebound, which was Pangia's goal first of the season.

The Pirates finished the match with 37 shots and 12 shots on target. The Whitworth defense held the Bruins to just four shots, two of which were on goal. Watters saved one shot, and Andrew Phillis saved nine.

Up next, Whitworth takes on Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday, Oct. 29. The road match will kick-off at noon.
