WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Jonah Snyder's 84th minute match-winning goal propelled the Whitworth Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the Whitman College Blues.
The victory boosted the Pirates' record to 3-3-1 in conference and 5-6-1 overall. Whitman falls to 3-3-1 in the Northwest Conference and 4-7-1 overall.
The match's momentum swayed between the two teams for nearly the entire match before Snyder's match-winner.
Whitman opened the match with a 7th minute goal from CJ Fritz, who took a pass from Ben Freedman before dumping a shot into the bottom of the goal.
Pirate captain Eric Espinoza fired right back. The senior took a pass from Snyder and sent an equalizer into the bottom-left corner of the goal. The 13th minute score was Espinoza's second of the season.
After Espinoza's goal, it was time for the freshmen to take center stage. Colman French sent a pass to Ethan Kem, who buried his second goal of the season to give Whitworth a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
Goalkeepers kept the scoreboard silent for the majority of the second half, but scoring resumed in the 82nd minute. Whitman's leading scorer, Noah Cavenaugh, dribbled all the way up from his defender position and tied the match at 2-2.
Rather than accepting a draw, the Pirates fired right back. Snyder, the Northwest Conference's reigning scoring leader, volleyed a pass from Espinoza to the back of the net to earn Whitworth the 3-2 win.
The Pirates finished the match trailing Whitman in shots 11-8 and shots on goal 6-5. Both teams created three corner kicks, and the squads combined for five yellow cards.
Snyder's goal and assist means he jumps to a tie for third on the NWC goals leaderboard and a tie for first on the NWC assists leaderboard, a small contrast to last year. In 2016, Snyder led the conference in goals, but totaled zero assists.
Next weekend, the Pirates are on the road again. They begin the second half of Northwest Conference play in McMinnville against Linfield on Saturday, Oct. 14.
