Three Pirate Seniors Garner First Team All-NWC

SPOKANE, Wash. – Three Whitworth men's soccer players have closed out their Pirate careers with recognition as First Team All-Northwest Conference honorees.  The NWC Office released the 2013 All-NWC Men's Soccer Team on Wednesday afternoon.

Balin Larson, Andrew Flint and Sam Selisch each earned First Team recognition in 2013.  Sam Engle was named to the Second Team while Matt Bray, David Starkovich and Spencer Wolfe all received honorable mention consideration.

Larson and Flint, both of Whitworth's center backs on the defensive line, each are repeat First Team selections.  Larson scored two goals this season and Flint had one goal.  But more important to Whitworth's soccer success, they each helped the Pirates post a 0.85 goals against average in 2013, allowing 16 goals in 18 matches (nearly 1,700 total minutes).  Whitworth opponents were only able to get off 4.3 shots on goal per match in 2013.

Selisch, an attacking midfielder who was an honorable mention All-NWC honoree in 2012, received First Team recognition this fall after leading the Pirates with eight goals and four assists (20 total points).  He ranks seventh in the Northwest Conference in goals scored and in total points.

Second Team honoree Engle battled through an injury-riddled 2013 season to finish with four goals and four assists.  He was only available to start in 11 of Whitworth's 18 matches.

Bray is on the honorable mention list for the second year in a row.  A defensive midfielder for the Pirates, Bray played a key role in Whitworth's stout defense this year.  But he also came forward to score goals in two of the Pirates' final four contests.

Starkovich and Wolfe are receiving All-Conference consideration for the first time.  The former high school teammates (Squalicum HS in Bellingham) both came on to play key roles for the Pirates this fall.  Starkovich started 14 matches and tied for the team lead in assists (5) and also scored a pair of goals.  Wolfe, who started 10 matches but appeared in all 18 games, had two goals and four assists from his outside back position.

The seven Pirates helped Whitworth finish 12-3-3 overall and 10-2-2 within the NWC this season.
