Whitworth Men Blank Whitman 2-0

SPOKANE, Wash. – Will Wren scored and had an assist to lead Whitworth to a 2-0 win over visiting Whitman in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates improved to 12-3-3 overall and 10-2-2 in the NWC.  Whitworth will now await word of a possible at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.  That announcement will come on Monday morning.

Both of Whitworth's goals came in the first half.  Matt Bray tallied his second goal of the season in the eighth minute off of assists from Wren and Sam Engle to give the Pirates a quick 1-0 lead.

Just 14 minutes later Engle set up Wren's goal with an outstanding crossing pass.  Wren finished for his fifth goal of the season.

Whitman (9-9-2 overall, 8-5-1 NWC) outshot Whitworth 13-7.  But many of the attempts were from distance and didn't threaten Pirate keeper Timmy Costa.  Costa finished with four saves.  Whitworth had a 5-4 edge in shots on-goal.  Stuart Ellsworth played the first half in net for Whitman, making one save and giving up both scores.  Niko Contos played the second half and made two stops.

Whitworth finished with a season sweep of the Missionaries.
