WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Choosing to rest starters for the upcoming NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament, the visiting Whitworth Pirates fell 2-1 in overtime to Whitman on Saturday afternoon.
Whitworth finishes the regular season with an overall record of 13-2-3 and a Northwest Conference mark of 10-2-2. The Pirates will find out when and where they will open the 2012 NCAA tournament when the field is announced on Monday morning (10:00 am PDT).
Tyler Clark scored the match-tying goal for Whitworth on a breakaway in the 77th minute from an assist by Kekoa Mountcastle. It was Clarke's first goal of the season.
"It was great to watch our guys battle back," said Whitworth head coach Sean Bushey. "Our seniors did an excellent job leading us – Kekoa's pass to Tyler was excellent as was Tyler's finish."
But Joe Virden headed in the winning goal in the 95th minute to give Whitman (8-8-4, 6-5-3) the sudden-death victory.
Andrew Clark had given the Missionaries a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Dhavan Vengadasalam had the assist on the play.
Nate Bell played in goal for the Pirates and made eight saves, four in each half.
"The team played well," Bushey said. "We believe in each other and today demonstrated that as we started and played a completely new lineup throughout the match. It was fun to watch."
