Whitworth Men Edge Corban 2-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Robbie Ubben scored the game-winning goal less than 20 seconds after Corban had tied the match in Whitworth's 2-1 victory over the Warriors in the men's half of the Whitworth Soccer Classic on Friday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Whitworth, ranked 24th in the latest NSCAA Division III Coaches Poll, improved to 2-0-1.  Corban fell to 1-1-1.

Josh Hamilton tied the match for the Warriors in the 60th minute when he finished a crossing pass by Tyler Hagen. 

Corban's goal was the first allowed by the Pirate defense over the first 260 minutes of the season.

But Ubben took the opening pass of Whitworth's ensuing kickoff and worked his way past several Warriors to score from near the middle of the penalty area.

Andrew French scored his first goal of 2012 in the 44th minute to give the Bucs a 1-0 advantage just before halftime.

Kyle Novak made one save in the first half for Whitworth, while Nate Bell made a save in the second half and allowed the Corban goal.  Steven Mason went the whole way in goal for the Warriors.

It was a close match statistically.  Corban had a 9-8 advantage in overall shots and a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.  Whitworth finished ahead in corner kicks.

Whitworth will take on 7th-ranked Wheaton on Saturday afternoon, while Corban battles Pacific Lutheran.

Wheaton 2, PLU 0 – The Thunder scored twice in the second half to pull away from the Lutes.

Stephen Russo headed in Adam Blackman's corner kick in the 63rd minute to get Wheaton on the board.  Josh Clark converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute for the insurance goal.

Wheaton (3-0) outshot PLU 20-10, including a 10-2 edge in shots on net.  Joe Reyburn made eight saves for the Lutes (1-3).
