Whitworth Edges Hamline for First Win
St. PAUL, Minn. – Karl Muelheims' goal in the 83rd minute lifted visiting Whitworth to a 1-0 win over Hamline University in a non-conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.
The win was the Pirates' first of the season after a scoreless draw with Augsburg on Friday afternoon. The Pipers fell to 0-2 with their second one-goal loss of the season.
For the second straight match Whitworth dominated the statistics. The Bucs outshot Hamlin 18-4, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth forced nine corner kicks and gave up none.
But the Pirates ended a scoreless drought of more than 190 minutes when Matt Bray dribbled into the box and found Muelheims, who made the first goal of his career a match-winner.
Kyle Novak made three saves for the Pirates to post his second straight shutout.
The Pirates will return home to Spokane to host the Whitworth Soccer Classic next weekend. Whitworth will take on Corban on Friday and Wheaton (Ill.) on Saturday, both at 3:30 pm.
