Pirate Men Make Short Work of Loggers
TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitworth men's soccer team (9-3-1, 7-2-0) scored early and often for a win at the University of Puget Sound (6-5, 5-4) on Sunday afternoon, 3-0.
Nate Spangler (Sr., MF, Rio Rancho, N.M.) got the ball rolling for the Bucs when he scored on a joint assist from Kekoa Mountcastle (Jr., F, Waiehu, Hawaii) and JT Meyer (Sr., MF, Spokane, Wash.). Spangler received the cross from the end line and put the ball into the corner of the net to put the Pirates ahead.
Spangler scored solo in the 57th minute when he dribbled to the corner of the penalty box and placed the ball past the PLU goalkeeper to put the Pirates up by two. Spangler's two goals put him at three for the year.
It was Robby Ubben (Fr., F, Gig Harbor, Wash.) who furthered the Buc lead in the 71st minute. Ubben recovered a blocked shot in front of the net to make it 3-0.
Brian Sherpe (Sr., GK, Centennial, Colo.) continued to be a rock for the Pirate defense with six saves against the Loggers. The game marked Sherpe's eighth shutout of 2011.
The Bucs will welcome George Fox University and Pacific (Ore.) to their home pitch this weekend. The contests are both set for 2:30 PM.
