Men's Soccer to Host Whitman on Senior Day

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth men's soccer team will face Whitman College on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM for their last home and conference match of the year.

The Whitworth men (13-3-1, 11-2) were a dominating force this past weekend with two impressive wins.The star of Saturday's match was Cameron Bushey (Sr., MF, Spokane, Wash.). Bushey netted two goals, both off of free kicks in their 2-0 triumph over Linfield College.

The first came in the 26th minute. Bushey passed the ball to Taylor Willi (Sr., D, Grants Pass, Ore.). Willi tapped it back to Bushey who put it low in the left corner of the goal for the lead.

Bushey did it again in the 66th minute when he sent the ball into the ride side of the goal from outside the penalty box.

Whitworth recorded 21 shots compared to Linfield's six and Brian Sherpe (Sr., GK, Centennial, Colo.) saved three of those attempts for the 2-0 shutout.

The Pirates scored the most in their Sunday afternoon match than they had all season. The flood gates opened up when Dion Coxe (Sr., D, Eugen, Ore.) rebounded the free kick by Bushey and headed it in in the 32nd minute.

Taylor Willi (Sr., D, Grants Pass, Ore.) was trouble for the Bearcats when he scored is third and fourth goals of the season. The first was courtesy of Nic Shaw (Sr., D, Helena, Mont.) who crossed it in front of the goal where Willi connected for a 2-0 lead. The second was a joint assist from Andrew French (So., MF, Lacey, Wash.) and Matt Bray (Fr., MF, Spokane, Wash.). Willi streaked up the field for the touch pass and made the play.

Just when the game appeared completely one-sided, Adan Vasquez shot from the middle of the field, outside the goal box and put it past Sherpe for a Bearcat score.

Anders Notsdahl (So., MF, Sandpoint, Idaho) and Sam Selisch (So., MF, Port Townsend, Wash.) both completed crosses for the Buc's fourth and fifth goals. Nostdahl kicked the ball in while Selisch used his head for the Pirates' fifth goal.

The Pirates weren't finished however until Matt Miller (Sr., F, Spokane, Wash.) shot from the middle of the box for their sixth goal in the 79th minute of play. The final score was 6-1.

The Pirates: Cameron Bushey has proved to be a formidable offensive force and leads the team with goals scored as well as seven assists. JT Meyer (Sr., MF, Olympia, Wash.) shares the assist leader spot with Bushey, also with seven.

Bushey was an NWC Offensive Player of the Week honorable mention while Brian Sherpe was the Defensive honorable mention for his perfomance over the weekend.

National Statistics: Brian Sherpe continues to frustrate opposing teams' offenses with a nationally ranked eighth goals-against average (0.486) and 10th in save percentage (.886).

Opponents: Whitman College (9-7-2, 9-4) is tied for third in the NWC and won both of their matches over the weekend. The Missionaries won in overtime, 2-1 against Willamette and blanked Linfield two goals to one. Cooper Schumacher scored his third and fourth goals of the year this past weekend to become one of two scoring leders on the Missionary squad. The other is sophomore Leland Mattheus.

The Pirates beat Whitman 2-1 in their last meeting in Walla Walla, Washington off of a game-winning PK conversion by Cameron Bushey.

The Coach: The fall of 2011 marks Sean Bushey's 16th season as the head men's soccer coach at Whitworth and no Pirate soccer coach has ever served longer in that capacity. Bushey, who has his USSF "A" license, has a 182-80-31 record after 15 seasons as the Bucs' head men's soccer coach (192-86-33 after 16 years overall as a head coach). He has led the Pirates to five Northwest Conference titles in the last seven years, and seven titles overall. He has been named Northwest Conference Men's Coach of the Year four times. Over the last 12 years, the Whitworth men are 160-52-25 (.728).
